Background of the study:
Traditional birth attendants (TBAs) have been integral to maternal healthcare in Ikom Local Government, offering culturally grounded support to women during childbirth. Their roles, steeped in indigenous knowledge and practices, complement formal healthcare services by providing accessible and personalized care (Etuk, 2023). With the increasing modernization of maternal health services, TBAs face both recognition and challenges as their traditional practices come under scrutiny. Studies indicate that while TBAs contribute significantly to community health, their integration into the modern healthcare framework remains complex (Okon, 2024). This assessment examines how TBAs operate within current healthcare paradigms, exploring the synergies and tensions between indigenous practices and modern medical protocols. In doing so, the study aims to highlight areas where traditional and modern practices can be effectively harmonized to improve maternal health outcomes.
Statement of the problem:
The role of traditional birth attendants in Ikom is increasingly contested by modern medical practices, leading to reduced recognition of indigenous healthcare methods. This tension results in gaps in maternal care delivery and challenges in integrating TBAs into formal health systems. The study addresses the extent to which TBAs are involved in maternal healthcare and the problems associated with their marginalization (Etuk, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate the contributions of TBAs in maternal healthcare.
To assess the challenges of integrating TBAs into modern healthcare systems.
To recommend strategies for improved collaboration between traditional and formal health services.
Research questions:
What roles do TBAs play in maternal healthcare in Ikom?
What challenges hinder the integration of TBAs into modern health systems?
How can traditional and modern healthcare practices be effectively integrated?
Research Hypotheses:
TBAs significantly contribute to positive maternal health outcomes.
Integration challenges stem from policy and cultural differences.
Collaborative models improve healthcare delivery.
Significance of the study:
This study underscores the value of TBAs in maternal healthcare and provides insights into bridging the gap between traditional and modern practices, benefiting health policymakers and practitioners in Ikom (Etuk, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study focuses solely on the role of traditional birth attendants in modern maternal healthcare within Ikom Local Government, excluding other health services or regions.
Definitions of terms:
• Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs): Indigenous caregivers who assist in childbirth.
• Maternal Healthcare: Services related to pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care.
• Integration: The process of combining traditional practices with modern healthcare systems.
